Compare Hale's Outsider with Burrow's Junky Essay

Compare drag ons Outsider with Burrows drug addict - Essay ExampleJunky was a semi autobiographical narrative of the daily life of a heroin addict. Although the book is quite straightforward in telling the story of a medicine addict it is considered to be more political than literary. The book attracted controversy because of its contentious drug themes, which is evident from subtitles in the book such as Confessions of an Unredeemed medicine Addict. Nevertheless, it is clear from the story that the author has depicted himself as an noncitizen amongst outsiders because he himself was not a drug addict but had ventured into the sleazy world of drugs in attempts to escape from his mental agony after he accidentally shot his wife. This paper makes a comparison of Burroughs work with Hales A state of Outsiders. The paper holds that Hale has focused and highlighted perceptions of how middle kinsperson whites in America began believing themselves to be outsiders in their own country d uring the period after the sulphur World War. In contrast, the Junky does not aim at creating any kind of sympathy for drug addicts. The book titled A Nation of Outsiders How the lily-white Middle Class Fell in Love with Rebellion in Postwar America by Grace Elizabeth Hale also deals with the issue of outsider in terms of the characteristics of life in America after the end of the Second World War. ... At this time Americans had started identifying themselves with outsiders or rebels whom they mostly associated with African Americans. Hale argues that in having identified themselves with the outsider, Americans had started pursuing inconsistent objectives. They had started working towards their self perceived independence and individual freedom. In being fascinated with outsiders, Americans had started desiring to remain connected and to pass value in terms of having a deep sense of sharing with other commonwealth. Such paradoxical reversals engrossed many white middle class Ame ricans after the Second World War. It became a fashion for middle class whites in America to have perceptions of being outsiders. Hale has depicted how a blown-up number of people began defining themselves as outsiders although these groups al slipway appeared to compete with one another. But all these people created their respective groups identity as outsiders. For instance, during the time when the spontaneous abortion debate was at its zenith, anti abortion activists thought of themselves as outsiders because the Supreme Court had legalized abortion in 1973. Because these people were entirely against legalizing abortion they started considering themselves as outsiders, while the insiders were considered to be those that were favored by the law of the land (Hale, 2011). The similarity of these circumstances can be felt in Burroughs Junky because nothing much has changed in the several years since the book was published. Drug addiction continues to be a strong moral issue for ma ny people and in being fair as a society Americans have not made much progress by way of understanding the ways in which drugs should be treated. It cannot be denied that there

Sources for the Design of the Taj Mahal Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Sources for the Design of the Taj Mahal - Essay ExampleThe Emperor and his court mourned Mumtaz Mahal for deuce years and he decided to commemorate his beloved wife with a building that which had no equal in the world.Mumtaz Mahal was laid to rest on the banks of the Jamuna river and a council of the best architects were assembled to prepare the designs for the memorial. Some experts attribute the design to Geronimo Veronneo, an Italian in the service of the Mughal emperors. However, others credit Ustad Isa Khan Effendi, a Persian, and his pupil Ustad Ahmad who did the detailed work. Ismail Khan designed the famous dome.It took 22 years to build the more than 20-storey edifice which required a total of 20,000 workers to finish. Craftsmen from as far as Turkey were engaged to establish their talents. Precious stones were imported from foreign lands. The marble was quarried at Makrana, close to Jodhpur. A ramp stretching two miles was built to reach the level of the dome. According to topical anaesthetic lore, Shah Jahan ordered the right hand of the chief mason to be cut off upon the buildings completion so that his work cannot be recreated. Another legend relates that the Shah precious to build another Taj across the river, this one made entirely of black marble. The symmetrically designed Taj Mahal sits on a raised platform and is surrounded by four minarets. Built during the height of the Mughal empire with its unparalleled riches, the best materials and adornments were utilized to furnish and decorate the Taj Mahal. There were rich Persian carpets, gold lamps and candlesticks. Beautiful mosaic works and precious stones were also used to decorate the buildings interior. Two great silver doors were said to have been melted down by Suraj Mal in 1764. A sheet of pearls covering Mumtaz Mahals sarcophagus was carried away by Amir Hussein Ali Khan in 1720. The surroundings of the Taj Mahal have been restored in accordance with the original designs of Ali Mardan, a noble in Shah Jahans court. A red sandstone channel set between two rows of cypress trees dominates the main vista. The main entrance is located at the west emplacement of the building but there are two other entrances from the west and east. The main gateway is a sandstone structure standing three storeys high. It has an octagonal exchange chamber with smaller rooms on each side. The walls are filled with inscriptions of verses from the Quran. The white marble which was quarried from Makrana varies in its tint and tone, changing with the light at conglomerate times of the day. Sheila S. Blair and Jonathan M. Bloom wrote in The Art and Architecture of Islam (1994) that the edifice stands on a large garden of quadripartite chahar bagh which measures 1,900 feet by 1,000 feet. Being at the northwesterly end of the garden and along the riverbank, a large gateway at the south end provides balance to the tomb. The tombs plan and massing is a refinement of Humayuns tomb in Delhi. Th e large bulbous dome of the mausoleum is more logically connected to its octagonal rooms compared to those of Humayuns tomb, and is framed by four minarets. The white marble is delicately excellent and the details of its carvings are intricate that they render a carefully balanced image on the channel. The symmetrical design is further balanced by a

Research methods for business and management Case Study

Research methods for business and management - Case Study ExampleThis can be done most effectively by examining the lit on the look topic and assessing how the data was collected for that body of search as well as the way in which the data was analyzed. Based on an examination of the literature, the researcher then determines the nature of the data to be collected as well as the most appropriate method for its analysis. Additionally, the researcher should be aware that quantitative methods prove to offer the highest level of scientific evidence in that depending on the research design it can determine causation, correlation and cave in inferences. Evidence even a little strengthens the credibility of the victim. If the victim is deemed credible, then the case will go to trial and given priority, if not, it will be rejected at this stage (Chancellor, 2012).When victims report of sexual assault to a police station, they record official statements. Is the Chinese Renminbi Undervalued Essay Example for Free

Is the Chinese Renminbi Undervalued EssaySince July 2005, first time being revalued after 11 historic period of fixing at 8.27, Chinese Yuan has been heading towards only one direction all the way from 8.27 to 6.27. Although Yuan is a highly set currency by g everyplacenment, Chinese officials could no longer peg the Yuan as it used to be in a closed economy because WTO had opened up doors for Chinese manufacturers in 2001 to export cheap goods and service to developed countries. With trillions of foreign capital flooding into the country, Yuan has appreciated over 30% over seven years. However, this one-way money flow cannot be sustained. Though it is not sure whether Yuan is at the absolute equilibrium, it is currently neither significantly undervalued nor overvalued. This act is going to explain why Yuan is modestly priced with analysis in both the fundamentals and money flows.Needs for appreciation in pastIn theory, two open economies should have equivalent purchasing p ower that is, if 10 building blocks of foreign currency can buy something that is valued at 1 unit of domestic currency, the implied equilibrium central rate should also be 10(domestic as based money). Otherwise, there is an arbitrage opportunity. We call this Purchase Power Parity. In reality, notwithstanding some limitations about this theory, it explains most of the valuation problem in China. Take a look at Chinas Balance of Payments over 2003-2010 and it is translucent to observe huge intemperance annually in both current and capital financial account, accumulating to a foreign reserve of $3.3 trillion.Reach equilibrium? At the government level, on one hand, it had to increase money base to maintain exchange rate against USD at a gradual appreciation pace. On the former(a) hand, it needs to hold huge foreign assets, primarily in USD, to back up its currency from deprecation in the event of capital outflows. Amid the money inflow, Chinese central bank faced mounting pressur e of inflation on local assets. The private sectors are impacted in two ways. Firstly, Chinese residents and companies smell much richer now because higher RMB increases their purchase power of foreign assets. This means more imports and capital account outflows. Secondly, inflation and appreciation means that Chinese products and services are more expensive. And this would lead to less exports.Pew Survey showed that 70% of Chinese people feel financially better off than five years ago, which among the best in the world. In the last a few years, the fact of continues Yuan appreciation, associated with stories about how China is cash rich and how Chinese investors are purchase everything they can in the world, raises interesting discussion if Yuan had appreciated enough. There is also a trend that more goods are manufactured in vernal WTO members such as Nepal and Vietnam that have price advantage over China. Moreover, in the currency forward market, investors have priced in modes t depreciation for Yuan in the next 12 months and spot market is no longer moving towards one direction.Data showsAll those various observations reveal the same process that drives RMB exchange rate to an equilibrium level. Recent data also suggests that at current FX level, the rise in trade tautologic and capital finance account surplus slowed (see chart below). So does foreign reserve. What does it means? If we apply a popular formulaCapital out flow = Foreign Reserve FDI Trade surplus Numbers imply that 62.4 128.5 145.8 = 211.9 billions has flown out of China in the first three quarters of 2012.Although this estimation still lacks of actual evidence, the scale of growth slowing cumulus in foreign reserve in 2012 is worth attention since it is so large that it is hard to be justified by seasonal adjustment or calculation period discrepancy. This might signal the start of reverse capital flows of Yuan, which means Yuan is no longer undervalued.UltimatelyThe answer to Yuans v aluation problem is complex especially given that it is still mostly controlled by government and there are so many dynamic factors to consider. So far there are some money flows and data support the conclusion that Yuan is no longer significantly undervalued. In the long run, as expectation of Chinese government to allow a fully conversion Yuan is built on, maybe the real answer can only be found out by then.

Thought and Thinker Essay Example for Free

Thought and Thinker Essay What is faultfinding approximateing? What atomic number 18 the terzetto most significant things that you learned almost critical persuasion during this class? How has your critical thinking changed since starting this course? Reevaluate your stage of development in critical thinking and why you placed yourself in that stage. If your rating has changed since Week One, explain why you think this change occurred. How do you plan to move yourself from your watercourse stage of development in critical thinking to the stage of master intellect?Format your paper consistent with Associate Level Writing bolt Handbook guidelines. According to Ruggiero (2012), thinking is any mental activity that helpsformulate or solve a problem, make a decision, or fulfill a desire to understand. Critical thinking enables us to recognize a wide range of subjective analysis of otherwise objective data, and to evaluate how well to each one analysis might meet our needs (Ku rland, 2000). From the definitions, we see that there is a big difference in the midst of thinking and critically thinking. As human universes we think all day, every day. We think about what we are going to wear in the morning, what task we have to complete at work, what we have to do later work, and even what we have to do the next day. When you are critically thinking, you are analyzing and breaking things down. For instance, when someone presents an idea to you at work. When that idea is presenting to you, you immediately begin to disassemble the idea how it will benefit, what is the systematics, what will it take to get the idea approved, etc.The three most significant things that I have learned about critical thinking during this class are the kind of thinker I am, the steps to take to not let my habits hinder my thinking and telling the difference between an issue and a problem. The beginning of the class was an eye-opener to me. Since I had taken the CAP class at my prev ious education institution, I never thought about what kind of thinker I was. This class has made me see that I am still a beginner thinker trying to improve without timed practice (Ruggiero, 2012). Chapter three taught me many things about myself also. There were things that I knew I did out of habit but did not know that sometimes my habits hinder my thinking capabilities. I never took the time to distinguish the difference between an issue and a problem. After going through week 5, I learned that they are both different although they go hand in hand. My critical thinking has changed since starting this class because now I am able to understand the splendor of critical thinking and how to use it appropriately. The stage of development that I placed myself in at the beginning of this course has changed slightly. I went from a beginner thinker to a practicing thinker. This change has occurred because I went from trying to improve without regular practice to acknowledging the practic es and including them in my daily critical thinking. I plan to more myself from being a practicing thinker to a master thinker by using all my skills acquired from the practices and involving them in my everyday thinking. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to participate in Humanities/111. Withthe skills and practices that I have learned in this course, I am able to work more efficient in my forthcoming courses.ReferencesKurland, D. (2000). What is Critical Thinking?.
